Check your keybinding for Retarder Increase and Retarder Decrease and just remap them to something a bit easier to deal with instead of whatever crazy key it defaults to. I use the retarder all the time to assist in slowing down the truck so I don't have to use the brake so much.
BTW, the automatic setting doesn't preclude manual use of the retarder. You can still turn it on/off on long grades. I'm not living the truck experience either; I find the sequential gearbox makes it too difficult to skip gears while making it way too easy to get lost in them. Automatic is easier to drive with a controller.

I know the retarder is a gearbox brake & engine of course an engine brake (I'm used to use the "engine braken" IRL on cars but that's just switching to a lower gear, in here it is different). I am playing with Xbox One controller and I set these two buttons (3 stripes and 2 rectangles) under Xbox button as keys to retarder. Unfortunately, when playing using "real automatic transmission" when using retarder my gear turns to neutral and I have to select gear up every time. Does anyone know what causes that and how to fix it? When using simple automatic transmission it doesn't happen.
